Why Readability Matters for Ecommerce SEO — and How to Measure It
The Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score measures how easy a piece of text is to read, based on average sentence length and syllable count per word. For ecommerce, the target is a score of 60 or above (roughly 8th grade level) — clear enough for most adult shoppers without being condescending.
Why Google cares:Readability correlates with dwell time, scroll depth, and return visit rate — all behavioral signals Google uses to evaluate page quality. Copy that requires a college education to parse loses readers before they convert. Lost readers mean high bounce rates. High bounce rates signal to Google that the content isn't satisfying the query.
Common ecommerce copy mistakes that hurt readability:sentences packed with feature specifications ("This 304 stainless steel 12-inch diameter 3.5mm thick pan..."), passive voice in product descriptions, technical jargon left unexplained, and paragraph blocks without visual breaks. Each raises grade level and drops ease score.
The fix is usually simple: split sentences at conjunctions, replace nominalisations with verbs ("provide support for" → "supports"), and use bullet points for specification lists. Run the revised copy through this checker before publishing. Aim for Flesch ≥60 on all product and category pages.
