How to Check Title Tag and Meta Description Length for Google
Google doesn't truncate title tags by character count — it truncates by pixel width. A title with narrow characters like “i”, “l”, and spaces can fit more text than one heavy with wide characters like “W”, “M”, and “@”. The safe limit on desktop is approximately 580px, which this checker calculates from your actual copy.
Meta descriptions are measured in characters. Google typically shows up to 160 characters on desktop and around 120 on mobile. Below 70 characters, Google often pulls its own snippet from the page — which may not reflect your intended messaging. The sweet spot is 120–155 characters: specific enough to earn the click, short enough to avoid truncation.
Best practice for ecommerce: Title tags should lead with the primary keyword and include a differentiator (brand, price tier, or unique attribute). Meta descriptions should address the search intent directly — for product pages, mention availability, shipping, or a specific benefit. For category pages, state the range (“100+ styles of...”) to attract broader queries.
